Beta Marine

Has anyone heard anything about or had experience with Beta Marine diesels? They are a converted Kubota we're looking at as a possible replacement for our Yanmar 2GM20. I'm just looking for opinions of users, company reputation, etc. We're interested in the 20HP B722 engine. Thanks!

We didn't really have "curves" persay, it was a mostly square corner, with the tip of the corner cut off. I'm not sure how this worked exactly, I never pulled a hoist around the corner.

Ceiling Hoists

Tim, With all this talk of moving masts, etc in your barn, I am reminded of a very simple hoist setup we had at a machine shop I used to work in. What we had, as I remember, was a track made of small, relatively lightweight I beams, that went around the shop. 2 or 3 chainhoists were hung from "...

I don't know if y'all have Home Depot or Lowes stores in ME, but out here I've seen norton brushes at Home Depot, and I think at Lowes, so that may be a less expensive route to go when you consider shipping. With our very thin hull, I'll be trying this in the near future as well.

Remember that older post, sometimes it's just so easy? I was ready to cut the coupler off, but I figured I'd make a few half hearted bangs on the coupler before breaking out the sawzall, then I heard a muted bang outside...the prop literally fell off of the shaft, followed by the strut. Go figure. A...

And no, I've not got the prop off yet. I haven't found a prop puller (working 12 hour days means when I get off, everything's closed)

Ah ha, well, had I known this before I pulled the engine out of the engine bay and onto the saloon floor (with a come-along, 20 feet of chain, my anchor line, much grunting and cabinetry destruction), I indeed would have pursued this direction. Unfortunately, the transmission flange is about 6 feet ...

Another Question: How do you remove the coupler from the prop shaft? I've found two holes, opposite each-other. Is there something I need to drive out of the hole, or is it connected some other way? The shaft is gouged in a couple places and I have to do some machining on the strut, so I've decided ...

OK, The good news is the hull isn't cored with plywood in that particular area...happy day :-) I chisel'd out the teak (ouch) plywood backing plate and then used vice grips to turn out the old bolts. 5 of 6 came out real easy, actually. The last one broke, unfortunately, and so far I've been unable ...

I've recently obtained electronic copies of the original design, and I see that this sail is called a "mizzen staysail." I have the original measurements on the design, but they are just the outside dimensions. How do I figure out how much "belly" there should be in the sail? Tony

"Fisherman" Sail

Ok, time for another question. Since I'm stuck until monday waiting for Tacoma screw to open so I can get my bronze bolts for the strut (at about $2 less each than online) I find my mind wandering to our rig. We have a Ketch rig, and I've seen other ketches with a sail I've heard called a "fish...

OK, going back to my physics classes in college...the bolt is in fiberglass, heat causes molecules to be excited, and expand, so if I'm causing the bronze bolt to expand, how does the tighter fit make it easier for me to get it out?

Good point, I was already planning on re-building that section of the hull. I don't know for sure if there's plywood core there or not. I found plywood when I put in the new seawater intake, which is about 6-7 feet away. In the strut's case, there is a seperate, additional plywood backer plate besid...

Strut Leak

Hey all, We splashed our Hardstad 31 yesterday and abruptly put it back on the trailer when water started welling up from an unknown leak from the prop shaft strut area. It's connected to the boat with sealant and 6 bronze bolts. I spent the morning grinding away a lot of poorly applied glass and re...

And now....the results!

Just to tie up loose ends... :-)

We closed on the boat yesterday, it is currently 37 degrees outside, the engine is pretty much toast and I started prepping it for removal two days ago. My reciprocating saw made short work of the exhaust hose.

Case Closed!

Marelon Seacocks

Howdy Y'all, What is your opinion of Marelon as a material for seacocks and thru-halls? I used to work in the plastics industry, so I am semi-familiar with how many different plastics are out there, and I know there are many that are extremely strong and will withstand high temp, chem exposure, etc....

It's Awaaay back in there, and it is active...the broker was stung just the other day, in fact. I'm not sure how far back it goes into the exhaust line, so I'm concerned spraying it with wasp killer might not do the job.

Well, I don't have a digital camera, but I'll work on a photo.
I'm familiar with the rig you posted, I just had never seen the wishbone configuration mentioned before.

Ok, not a "classic" but..

The other day my wife and I were touring a marina and we saw what must be the strangest rig I've ever seen. I assume it was for some kind of ocean race. The boat itself was quite obviously some kind of custom job, it was about 50 feet long, with an aft cockpit. There were virtually no windows other ...

Insulation

Howdy Y'all, In your esteemed opinions, what have you found to be the best material to use for insulation in a boat to mitigate/prevent condensation? What is the best way to go about applying said insulation? I did read about what you did on glissando, Tim, with the foam between cleats, I'm just won...

Solar Fan...

For a solar powered fan, watch automotive places. I remember seeing solar powered fans designed to fit in a partially open car window to keep the car cooled down...I'd imagine this could be adapted, and if I remember correctly the price was around 30 bucks.
