Re: Answer #374
Sad news-Answer #374 was lost 58 miles east of Cape Hatteras on Sunday afternoon. David Wilson is safe and well, but no doubt hurting for the loss of his beloved vessel. Godspeed, Answer.

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Mahoney's was our go to place most of the time when we were up there. Our boat is at Brownell Systems which is 7 Industrial Drive. Mahoney's is 1 Industrial drive :) We ended up going to the Sears in Fairhaven to get the tool we needed. Turns out we didn't. The nuts came off the next day after havin...

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Well I'm up here in Mattapoisett working on the boat. So far my friend and I have removed all the standing rigging, the compression beam and two chainplates. We're also stripping out the head in preparation for restoration. The owner before the owner we bought her from seemed to think paint was the ...

Removing the standing rigging
I have never removed the standing rigging of a boat before in my life. I understand it, and know the principles of how it all is fastened together, but I have no idea what tools might be required and what challenges there might be. I believe the previous owner has left a great many tools on the boat...

Join the Triton Yahoo Group and search for Dave Wilson to read his comments on Answer and how he's upgraded and maintained her. I think he does have so photos up too.

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
I agree, that's the way that I see it. The things I'm doing are the best value for the money, and I believe that my efforts will yield a strong and capable boat. I'm finding that so far, costs are running well below my estimates which is a great feeling.

Dave and Answer are the biggest single inspiration for me and #268. My refit is modeled directly on Answer and Dave's philosophy of keeping it simple.

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Compression beam will either be repaired or replaced...not entirely settled on which, of course it partially depends on need, but if I find it to be intact and otherwise OK I'm undecided whether I will upgrade it or just replace. It partially depends on what kind of work space I have available to me...

Pearson Electra Owner's association
I am taking over the Pearson Electra owner's association as of today, and wanted to spread the word. I think the Electra is a bit underrated and wanted to help change that. Ken, who previously ran the association did a lot of good work for the class, but unfortunately no longer has the time to keep ...

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Aha! I thought about that boat, but I think you picked her up before I got a chance to go look at her. She looked good to me, although I dearly love the forward opening ports on our boat. I wasn't aware she didn't have them. Yes, what I've heard is that 707 Tritons were built and then a final one wa...

Good to hear Brian...I was afraid some sort of catastrophe had befallen you! I look forward to hearing more about the Westsail, and of course seeing pictures. Now a *pink* Westsail would be quite a sight! A lot better than some other colors I've seen!

Re: Dinghy identification
Well finally got around to cropping the best photo I have of the dinghy. It's not very clear, and it's upside down, but it clearly shows that it's quite round, as opposed to the hard chines found on the Dyer brand and others.

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Carl, sounds like we're pretty much doing the same thing. My toilet system is technically legal, but the holding tank is just tucked behind the head at the moment and not secured in any way-not really a permanent kind of situation! I haven't decided on where to put my new permanent holding tank. Wha...

Re: Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Sean-many thanks for sharing that. That's a nice, very comprehensive list. It gives me a number of things to contemplate that I hadn't thought of before. More on that later. triton318-Yes, the issue of leakage was one of the things I was thinking about. It could save some maintenance. I was wonderin...

Re: The passing of one of this list's members
Always sad to hear of the passing of a member of this community. I am so glad for Phil that he was able to fulfill his dream. That's a pretty special thing to have done something like that. Fair winds and following seas, fellow sailor. I hope his boat finds a worthy home. A well sailed Triton like t...

Pearson Triton-Bluewater on a budget
Well, I think the time has come to start a thread for the refit/restoration of hull #268. We are planning on a comprehensive, but fairly austere refit of the boat that will make her capable of sailing in an offshore environment. There's a long list of things to do and progress will be slow, especial...

The Pearson Plebe looks about right. It has a rounded bottom like that instead of the hard chines. I'll see if I can't get some pictures resized and posted.

Dinghy identification
My Triton came with what I am told is a Dyer dinghy, around 8' which would make it a Dyer "Midget". Problem is, it doesn't look quite right for a Dyer. It's nicely rounded, and though it has about the right shape in plan and profile, but it lacks the hard chines characteristic of the Dyers...

Re: Need halyards, sheets, rope, cord?
Another great source for rope and cordage of ALL types is R&W Rope in New Bedford. http://rwrope.com Some of their rope products are available directly online, while others require that you call them for a quote. But they're super helpful on the phone, their prices are always great, and their s...

Re: Adding Logitudinal Stringers
If I were rebuilding a boat so completely, and I was worried about hitting things, I'd make as many watertight compartments as feasible (ala Baldwin's Atom) but I suspect given your thoroughness that you've already thought of this and perhaps on planning on doing so.

Hi Steve, she was last named Barjosa and was owned by Cory Mason who sold her to me. Prior to that she was owned by one Marvin Winkler, under the same name. I have the list owners all the way back to the beginning.
Thanks for the congrats/welcomes guys! :)

Boat naming!
Yes, I am one of those who believes in naming a boat PROPERLY. I'm a rather superstitious soul, and when it comes to dealing with the sea, there's no point in taking chances! My question is rather technical (I'm also obsessive) and involves a boat that may or may not have been named improperly in th...

Re: Triton battery arrangements
Ah, should've thought to check there. The only place I checked was the Triton class MIR page and, of course, on Glissando. I hadn't considered the wiring issue with regards to placing them in the cockpit lockers, I was just repeating what I'd seen others do. The more I think about it, the more I lik...

Triton battery arrangements
The only battery arrangement I've seen on the half dozen Tritons I've looked at is the standard "battery forward of the engine" situation which, as has been pointed out by others, is not really the safest or most ideal arrangement. My question is, what have others done about this? I believ...

New Triton owner (can't resist showing off)
Hi guys, I just bought Triton #268 out in Mattapoisett MA. She's cosmetically not so great, but she's the most structurally sound Triton I've seen. Decks were recored, rig is in good shape, the compression system (beam and posts) is in outstanding condition considering her age. Electrical is a disas...
