Laminated tiller or not?
I am planning on making a new tiller to replace the wheel steering om my Triton. My plan was to laminate 2 pieces of mahogany with a piece of maple in the middle to make up the thickness I would need to fit the tiller head then band saw the profile and shape. I just happened to have some 1x material...

Re: Peel-Away or other strippers.
My wife told me to stay away from the Strippers! I've been using a Hyde carbide scraper then sanding with my Porter Cable DA and 80 grit with good results. The blades don't get dull they get chips and have to be replaced. Takes about 2 - 3 double sided blades to do my Triton. John R. Triton Yawl #15

Triton top opening lockers
I'm planning on removing the death lockers on my early Triton and either making top opening cockpit lockers of installing some sort of sealing hatch. Anyone have pictures of a late model hatch door or pictures of how they built their own? I'm figuring I need some sort of lip glassed in around the op...

Definitely not chromed bronze. The opening ports in the main cabin are aluminum but the smaller ones in the head and V-berth are bronze. It's possible they where changed. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_sXYmJBtJm9I/Se4NeHQBKeI/AAAAAAAAAOI/lb4fHK_j3pI/389137662_1346102588_0.jpg John Triton Yawl #15 Silver Girl

What are the thoughts on reinforcing the area with stainless. In the MIR the owners of #241 and a Triton named Protege have installed ta T brace of 1/4" stainless. I'm weary of putting even 316 Stainless in a sealed environment like that. Possibly a brace made of marine bronze would work. John

Yet another Triton false keel project
My Triton (hull #15) has the ubiquitous false keel crack that some one has tried to repair in the past. Apparently they didn't know that fiberglass does not stick well to old bottom paint and I'm able to peel the repair off in nice tidy sheets. I've drilled some 1/4" test holes and they ooze a ...

I tried the Razor scraper idea and it worked great. It only pealed the paint back to the bottom layer of pea green paint, but it's pretty easy to sand that off to the gel coat with 80 grit and the random orbit sander. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_sXYmJBtJm9I/Se4NeHQBKeI/AAAAAAAAAOI/lb4fHK_j3pI/389137662_13...

And when your boat is holed below the waterline 1000 miles off shore. The lack of a liner to cut through to effect emergency repairs is probably a good thing.

Since I live a million miles away from the nearest Alexseal dealer I'm going to have to go mail order. So far the best prices I have found on Alexseal paint have been at Hamilton Marine. Anyone have other suggestions?

I've installed a tachometer on my '59 EC Triton and when motoring at full throttle it shows my Atomic 4 is only turning 1900 rpm. This seems a little low to me. What is the normal cruising RPM on a Triton with an A4?

Is there something that is supposed to keep the companion way hatch attached to the boat? Even with my hatch fully closed I can lift it up off the rails and remove it. There doesn't seem much use locking the boat up if I can just lift the hatch off.
Thanks
