Thanks. I can appreciate the gray area between art and science. Certainly, what looks good on one boat may not be appropriate for another. I'll ponder this some more. I have some time yet. Still working on the primer this weekend. Family from out of town visits this week, but when the time is right ...

Thanks Tim and Dave. I agree, it can look horrible. I will likely take her back down to the ramp and measure again with two adults in the cockpit. Originally, the cove stripe on mid-80's Com-Pacs is a 4" wide brown stripe bordering the rubrail running from the stern edge to roughly a foot short...

Water Line

My Com-Pac 16's hull is cured of it's blister problem. Dried, filled, and faired. Barrier coat applied, even above the waterline where I faired with 410, per West System instructions. Will be using System Three primer with WR-LPU and VC Performance. However, I have lost my original waterline. Of cou...

I know this is a little late reply. For what it's worth, I use a cage type roller with the yellow West System foam roller covers. I have found it nearly impossible to remove the cover without making a mess of it. So, I let it cure. Next day I step on the cover and give the edge of the roller a good ...

My plan is to us VC Performance on my com-pac 16 (speed demon that she is). Really, she'll be stored on the trailer. I am curious if she'll accelerate more quickly. Had blisters and followed the West System instructions to a "T" with success. Of course, I faired the hull prior to the barri...

I, too, can confirm that DeBond works well. As mentioned, apply it where the 5200 meets the surface. Cut into the 5200 if possible. Used this method to remove a poorly bedded motor mount. 5200 was 0.5" thick at it's thickest. Simply waited a few minutes after application and removed with a putt...

I agree with the idea that the "shoebox" style of joint would be a good candidate for a glassed joint. The Com-Pac-16 has a flange joint which would be a bad candidate for such. 5200 and hundreds of tiny bolts. It's a small boat after all.

That is so cool. Thanks for the tip. 50/50 mix is my preference on my project. I can't help be wonder if the beige is more compatible with the darker wood of the Daysailor. What's the color scheme for the brightwork of your current project? I have very little teak on the CP-16. It's a very little b...

On the other hand I think the folks at Interlux are colorblind. I painted my nonskid with Interdeck beige and everyone comments on my new pink cabintop. Funny you should say that. I was concerned about the nature of their non-skid based on photos I'd seen. I was optimistic and chalked it up to the ...

Measured twice cut once. The compression post dry fits perfectly. Actually, I should give credit to a friend of mine who has his own woodworking shop by his house. Yes, it appears that either shimming or milling a counter-angle will work here. I am leaning toward the milling option at the moment. Paint research begins. Thought I'd start with Interlux. I'm not too worried about creating more work for myself. As you can tell, I'm pretty good at it. But, I am con...

Another consideration: The edges of the awning can be cut with a slight concave curve. The corners will be a little extra pointy, but, flapping will be minimized once pulled tight. Kites often have this cut to the aft edge of the wing. Some mountaineering tents have the same edge, too. BTW, nice qui...

Quick update. I have been playing with the test panel of plywood and small batches of epoxy. Tried it neat, with colloidal silica, and 410 fairing. Am I glad I have!? Neat epoxy is pretty easy to work with. Bonded a block of wood to the plywood with the c. silica. Worked nicely first try. Fairing 41...

If I may add a question regarding the bootstripes. What are the criteria, if any, for choosing a double stripe vs a single? I noticed the "daysailor" has relatively thin double stripes and looks fantastic. Is there a time when that would look stupid say on a shorter boat? It's amazing to m...

Thanks for the information. Yes, I did order the metering pumps. The resin and hardener are group size B. I anticipate the mixed (unthickened) epoxy to be somewhat watery, based on the viscosity information I read. Maybe, it's more like warm syrup at this stage? I plan to experiment on plywood (even...

Hi all. I have just about completed my sanding part of my blister repair project. Ordered the basics for West Epoxy: resin, 206 hardener, various fillers for the future, and barrier additive. It seems like several years ago Sail Magazine wrote an article about microbursts. One example they used was an event at Lake Norman, NC a local lake I like to frequent. Update on my first project: I have sanded the bottom paint off and found more blisters than I can count. Have ground some, popped some, and scraped some only to find they are dry. Yeah. Great idea. Enjoyed the photos. I think it was in "Fastnet, Force 10" where I read that photosgraphs of the sea and waves tend to appear flattened, that is, the photos don't do the size of the waves justice. I couldn't help but notice in the third photo that the waves appear a little...

How Dangerous is it, really?

I'm referring to materials used in repair of fiberglass sailboats. Specifically, regarding grinding old anti-fouling bottom paint and gelcoat. You see, my boat has blisters, well more like pox. Too many small blisters to count. I elected not to use a chemical stripper for a variety of reasons, so I ...

Questionable Classic

Hi all: My first post. I was wondering if you thought the Com-Pac yachts are considered classics. I currently sail a CP-16 (1989). Currently, this model is not in production as they are concentrating on different models. To me, they have a classic look. However, she does have "issues." You...
