Re: New Chainplates

this info may be helpful or harmful.....just found out recently that SS may corrode as quickly as bare steel in an environment that lacks oxygen....it seems that oxygen causes a surface film of corrosion(for want of a better word) on the SS which prevents it from corroding any further....I certianly...

Re: Aluminum mast repair

I would not advise welding aluminum, unless it can not be avoided. Welding can reduce the strength of aluminum by upto or more than 50% locally in the weld affected area. As others have pointed out, I personally would not worry about leaving the holes as is or at most just plug them to keep the mois...

Re: Ericson 27 Project

Sounds like you did alot of research on this fix before proceeding which is always a prudent way to go. Getting advice from professionals that have past experience in similar problems should give you a level of confidence in the integrity of the fix. What prompted all of this was what seemed to be a...

Re: Ericson 27 Project

Another thought came to mind on the spreader reinforcing area. I can not see any attachment of the thru bar(which the spreaders attach to) to the mast itself. If it is just a slip fit in the slot, it can slide back and forth thru the mast which is not how the original spreader setup was designed to ...

Re: Ericson 27 Project

These comments are not intended to pour cold water on your impressive project but felt obligated to pass on some issues I noticed about the reinforment detail on the mast at the spreader bar. The size and thickeness of the added reinforcing plate looks ok. For future reference..cutting a horizontal ...

Re: Teak treatment-possible pollutant

Galleywench.....thanks for the reply. FYI, phosphorus has been discontinued in most common household laundry detergents for many years. I guess the concern is with the ingredients in the wood sealant/stain itself and I have not found anything in the literature indicating a problem that I can underst...

Teak treatment-possible pollutant

I have been using ordinary deck sealant/stain(BEHR's) on the teak for the last 10yrs and it has worked quite well. I was cleaning the teak with Tide w/bleach powder and scrub brush with boat in water about aweek ago and someone at the marina complained that it was leaving a sheen on the water. My qu...

Re: Sillcocks, Saber 28 Restoration

Thanks Rachel for your feedback. I agree that one should use only a high-quality marine product in below waterline situations but there does not seem to be any marine hoses on the market specifically designed for the cockpit drain conditions which are far less severe then the engine exhaust hoses th...

Re: Sillcocks, Saber 28 Restoration

The cockpit drain hoses on my seasprite are closing in on 30 years and was thinking of replacing them. The existing ones are fabric reinforced with about 1/8" thick wall. The only close to suitable marine hoses on the market today are generally for intake/exhaust applications and are very stiff...
