Group 24 AND Group 27 in same installation
If I installed two new dual purpose batteries, a group 24 and a group 27, using the old style battery selector switch,(without an automatic charging relay) would there be problem as long as they are both lead acid types?

Re: How to build a float
Rachel,
Not sure if you ever built your float, but a freind of mine used plastic barrels for floatation. I think they were pickle barrels.

Mike D... Great thread and the photo of the "magazine rack idea" is exactly the right concept. Dick Coerse... Great discription and concept! And, you will be in my prayers as you undergo your hip surgery. I'll pray for a speedy recovery! Send me an e-mail and let me know how you are doing....

Re: Companionway board storage
Dick and Squid,
Thanks for the ideas. I have had in my mind the idea of something made of wood that I could install either in the quarterberth or the nav station. Dick, I like the plywood pouch idea. Any photos by chance? Anyone else?
Thanks,

Companionway board storage
I want to build a permanent storage for the companionway boards. I was thinking of either a tray/shelf in the top of the quarterberth and lay the boards flat, or perhaps a ledge and store them vertically, perhaps using a bungee cord to hold them in place while sailing, also in the quaretberth. Any t...

Hillerange Pressurized Alcohol Stove
I took a look at a friend's stove yesterday. His stove top is seemless with a small bowl molded into the stainless top under each burner. We followed the pre-heat instructions to the letter, but following the pre-heat, the burners refused to light. We tried both 20-25 strokes on the pump and fewer, ...

Re: Cetol Gloss + 333 Brushing Thinner?
For what is worth, a sailor over on another site said the kerosene and the VMP naptha (he says better than mineral spirits) that is in the Interlux 333 Brushing Thinner makes this thinner an excellent choice for the Cetol. I know Cetol says do not thin, but I cannot imagine getting a final coat that...

Re: Cetol Gloss + 333 Brushing Thinner?
This summer I saw a team of "teak pros" working in the boatyard. These guys were equipped and you could tell this was not their first rodeo. I asked them what they were adding to the Cetol and in a Caribbean dialect they said: "tree, tree, tree, Mon." I tried it and today it look...

Cetol Gloss + 333 Brushing Thinner?
This post is after the fact, but taking advantage of the last good weather weekend of the year, my First Mate and I applied Cetol Gloss to all of the teak trim on our Cape Dory 30. I had never tried this before, but I added a splash of 333 Interlux Brushing Thinner and the results were very good. I ...

Re: Battery Terminal-Fuse Holder Sizing Problem
Doug, assuming that you cannot change the ends of the fuse holder to the correct size, then: 1. Use a fender a washer of the correct ID. 2. Or use a bushing to prevent the pplay at the battery terminal 3. Use hex nuts. Wing nuts are no longer approved for marine use. I work at West Marine. All of th...

I was introduced to Morey's Red grease a couple of years ago, and it has been fantatsic for seacocks. Any thoughts about using this waterproof grease on Lewmar winch bearings?

Re: Companionway Sliding Hatch Reinforcement

Companionway Sliding Hatch Reinforcement
Plastic Classic Sailors All: For some time, I have been concerned about the strength of the fiberglass sliding hatch over the companionway on our 1984 Cape Dory 30. Specifically, I wonder about the strength of the tabs of the hatch that slide in the nylon and wood rails. When I am working on the sai...

BCooke: Wow, this discussion has grown more legs than I expected! No, the rivets I used are listed below. McMaster Carr item #97217A359 on page 3240 of their online catalog. "Slotted-Body Rivet Nuts for Thin Materials" I drilled 11/32" holes. These worked great. I installed ten (10) o...

Britton, the rivets I used were made of steel and used 5 across the top and 5 across the bottom, all 3/16" in diameter. I think it will hold.
It sure feels secure, anyway.

Slotted Body Rivet Nuts!
To anyone interested... I drilled and installed ten 10-32 threaded rivets yesterday. I used both the rivets and rivet tool available from McMaster Carr. Re: Attachment of cabinet to hull liner?
Plan A is the threaded rivet system! My rivet gun and 10-32 rivets arrived this week from McMaster Carr. A test I tried on a thin piece of luan plywood looks and feels promising! I will keep you updated and at some point I'll put up photos.

Rachel,
Small cans of food and condiments will go in the cabinet. I do not see this cabinet serving as a grab handle while going up and down the companionway.
I''try to post some photos.

Attachment of cabinet to hull liner?
I am completing the construction of a cabinet (approx 18" x 20") to go in the galley area, just inside the companionway on my Cape Dory 30. There is a sturdy hull liner where the cabinet is to be located. I have allowed for 10 fasteners (5 at the top and 5 at the bottom) to hold the cabine...
