Re: Inside vs outside

OK, the ICW it is. This was a decision too important to leave to a coin toss, thank you for the advice. I am leaving Ocean City Md. Thursday morning; since I am traveling alone I won't be in a big hurry, insurance won't cover me south of Hatteras before Nov 1 anyway. This is proving to be a pretty i...

Inside vs outside

I am getting ready to head for Cape Hatteras, does anyone have advice on whether I should take the ICW or go outside? I am in Ocean City Md now, is there a reason not to go outside? I have not passed this way yet, I am singlehanding my boat (45' sloop)

Thanks

Re: Current & wind info?

I appreciate the advice, got plenty of time to prepare for the big trip. I'd planned to leave last month but decided to postpone it long enough to do it with competence. I'll keep everyone posted!

Thanks

Re: Current & wind info?

Thank you Rachel, That was really helpful, I won't be starting the big trip for a while but I definately want to go with the flow and avoid the storm seasons. So through the Panama canal it is, I'm going to play here around Cape Cod this summer and after hurricane season it's off to the Caribbean. I...

Current & wind info?

I am still a ways from the big trip but I am starting to map out a tentative course for my circumnavigation, does anyone have an idea where I can find info on currents, tradewinds & such? I'd rather map out an efficient route, I'll be leaving from the Caribbean and am up in the air about going e...

Ready--Set--No go

Well I didn't make it out of town this year, too many details left to insure a safe passage but it will be going full tilt in the spring. I made a video of the progress from when I started till now. See you on the water.

Re: Looking for advice

Thanks Rachel, I planned to be there by now but things never seem to happen as quickly as planned. This will be a first long distance trip for both Amnesty and me. I really want to leave asap but not at the cost of putting the boat or myself in danger. Been in some pretty dicey trials up here, just ...

Re: New paint job for Nossa Senhora Da Conceicao

I spent a lot of time prepping my boat for new paint, took it clear down to the glass & used a ton of polyfare. 3 coats of awl grip primer and 4 topcoats; still had pinholes & dimples but I can't see them from the healm. Just keep her lookin good is a lot to keep up with.

Taking the rest of my life off to go sailing, first to the Caribbean then westward. Got an interesting story to help other c...

Re: A long time coming

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement, Amnesty is a Bruce Roberts design, 45' and a 13' beam; draws 6' and displaces approx 49,000 lbs. I built her in my front yard, although I didn't throw the hull this is a pretty unique boat. I have had a lot of encouragement with this project since I was dia...

Well, splashdown went well! the waterline was even right on the $$ (lucky shot) I've been working towards this day for over 6 years and dreaming of it a lot longer. Think this wasn't an emotional day? Try building a boat, then being diagnosed with a cancer and nearly giving up; Now the boat is in an...

I had a lot of support from close friends as well as friends I have yet to meet, couldn't have done alone and I would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to all. I have wanted to build a boat a...

Dreams do come true!

It has been my life's dream to build a boat and take it around the world. It is nearly finished and with a little help from my friends cancer couldn't even stop this one! I have to do the rigging and she's ready to be commissioned. See ya on the water! Specs; 45' with a 13' beam, 6' draft, 50' sail ...

Looking for some rigging advice

I am a carpenter and never got involved with rigging in the boat shop, sort of wish I had now as I have a 45' sloop and it is time to rig her. If I hire a rigger it will get done properly but I still won't know how to fix things if they fail on a cruise. So against all the good advice I have recieve...

My Dream

I was about 10 or 12 when I decided I was going to build a boat and take it around the world; time sure passes quickly, about 5 years ago I bought the empty hull of a Bruce Roberts sloop and started in. Last year I was diagnosed with a cancer and nearly gave up on my dream, some dear friends pried m...
