I use a metallic bristle brush on a drill. I use the edge of the brush. You need to keep a steady hand so as not to damage the fiberglass or the gelcoat although some damage is unavoidable.
I figure it's easier to repair small damages rather than spend the time to remove the silicon...

Removing the rudder
My rudder is full of water and I want to remove it to dry it out and make necessary repairs.
The problem is I have no idea how to remove the thing.
Any pointers?

Funny situation
I've read several times over Tim's "blog" about the refit of Glissando and I remember a passage in which he writes that his sawzall's blade snapped and that he was, of course, out of blades. This week-end, when packing my tools to go to the boat, I had this passage in mind and I packed sev...

Alternatives to push/pull transmission cables
I'd like to know if anyone has experience with an electric transmission switching system, specifically, instead of the usual push/pull transmission cables. The transmission levers in my cockpit are in the way where they are presently and I'd like to move them just below the tiller. Considering that,...

Mold in hard to reach places
I was in the boat today lying down in a cramped part of the boat beneath the cockpit and I noticed that the fiberglass sports a coat of mold extending beyond my reach.
Any advice on how to get rid of mold in those hard to reach places?

After doing some research on this boat, I purchased her. This is what I found out: This boat was originally designed by Morgan and produced in the Morgan Yacht yard in St. Petersburg FL from 1967-1970 as the 45-1, keel sloop. When the racing rules changed for handicapping ocean racing yachts in the...

Is there a central hub around the net somewhere (or here maybe) which lists blogs about amateur boat restorations?

Ceto, back when I was employed we used solar panels to power our river monitoring stations. In the almost 20 years I was there, I do not recall us ever replacing one. In fact, one had someone shoot a hole through it and it only lost a fraction of it's output and we didn't need to replace it either....

Do solar panels have a lifespan?
I would imagine so, nothing is eternal after all. What about probable life span then?

About a hull that has been deformed by a jackstand
There's an area on the hull of my boat where there is a bit too much pressure. The hull has been pushed in a little bit by the pad of the jackstand. There are no stress cracks.
I was wondering if the hull will return to normal when the pressure from the pad is removed...

Thanks Allen. I like your no-nonsense answer. If you spent this kind of money restoring just about any old car you could insure it for $100k easily, but because the corporate world does not see boats in the same way, we get the short end of the stick. Perhaps that's because these cars are used as mu...

Value of restored boats
How is the value of a boat determined once the restoration is finished (I know, I know, it's never finished...)? For insurance purposes and/or resale, for instance. I would think that a restoration adds a certain value that is more than the sum of the price paid for all the new items fitted in the b...

What makes a plastic boat a classic?
I know a lot of stuff about guitars. I own 8, have been playing for over 20 years and I can spot a classic guitar a mile away.
As far as plastic boats go, what makes a boat a classic?
Would my Northstar 500 qualify as one?

Jackstand behavior on pavement
I'm going to move my boat any day now to a place where there's pavement. Should the jackstands be anchored in the pavement with a big nail or will they be ok just freestanding?
I'm kind of wary of big gusts of winds tipping over the boat.

Has anyone tried out this BBQ?
It's manufactured by local company Woodflame (in Québec). They have two basic models (the Gusto and the Delecto). They have modified their Gusto model to be adaptable to boats. The principle here is that these BBQ work with hard wood, not coal or gas. Any input appreciated. http://www.woodflame.com/...

Let me introduce myself
I made the crazy plunge into the world of boat ownership two years ago and I've just come around to starting to work on the boat. The boat I bought is a Northstar 500. Before I bought it, my requirements were that it had to have an inboard engine (can't abide the look of a dangling outboard behind) ...
