Cranberry Isles, Maine

Has anyone ever anchored off of Baker Island? I read the cruising guide's writeup and it looks like an intriguing place to spend a night on the hook. What did you think?

Re: Cetol or Varnish?......

Every time that I have used Epifanes, I have also followed their instructions to the letter with good results. I used their thinner too which went a remarkably long way, so for me it was worth the price.

Re: Cetol or Varnish?......

Great idea for the baseboard, I may go that route myself. Of the paint that has peeled so far, it has taken the original varnish off with it exposing nice veneer. I remember the previous owner telling me that he wanted to "brighten it up down below"...Ouch... I will have my fingers crossed...

Re: Cetol or Varnish?......

I've become addicted to using a small scraper and heat gun for removing finishes. Though incidental damage is a concern, adjacent 'glass, etc. I wonder about damaging inner glue lines in laminated work, too. I second the use of a heat gun, scraper, and good technique. And I second your concerns on ...

I had huge success refinishing my wheel last year with Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss and plan on using it for the rest of my boat this year. I can appreciate a good varnish job, but time and weather are my enemies so I'm drawn to a no-sand product like this one. The ease of use and aesthetics really imp...

Not the Barred Islands, although they are lovely. Seal Bay is truly spectacular and I think that this tiny harbor reminded me of it somewhat. It was a gem that we discovered last season. I'll give two big hints...it took us less than two hours to sail there from Rockland and it's less than six miles...

Both pictures were taken within a minute of each other. It was the beginning of August at sunset so I'm guessing that it was somewhere around 7:30pm or so. Mount Desert is not in the background of the first picture. I agree, this is fun :)

Re: Cleaning a Diesel Tank

The tank is fiberglassed into the bilge under the cabin sole so removal is impossible. It also has baffles which may complicate things. I will certainly check out the product that you mentioned. I recently heard that kerosene can be used to help flush out a tank too. Thanks.

Cleaning a Diesel Tank

My ketch has a 45 gallon fiberglass fuel tank located under the cabin sole and I know that it is in need of cleaning. The access port at the top of the tank is one inch in diameter which is too small to be used to clean the tank, so I plan to increase it's size for better access. Assuming that I dra...

Thanks. Mike, I'll be sure to e-mail you and let you know when we'll be up there in Casco Bay. I am very impressed with how balanced the boat is. We have had many passages with little to no adjustment to the helm. That particular tack was just magical.

After taking the last sailing season off in order to finish my master's degree, Excalibur is afloat again. No pictures yet, but I took this video on Sunday sailing off of NH. On this particular tack we did not touch the helm for almost an hour.

London Goes to Sea is a great book that details the true cost of ownership and feelings about whether a 27 foot boat is "big enough". The boat's a Cape Dory 27 too, which is a honey of a boat in my mind.

I was under the impression that vented loops contained a one-way valve for the air to pass through. I imagine it's possible for that one-way air valve to fail thereby allowing the siphon to occur. A friend of mine who has a Block Island 40 had the siphon problem and he added a loop above the waterline without a check valve. Check valves die, hence making them potentially dangerous in my opinion. The bilge hose that I had the siphon problem with last year had a check valve inline with it. Another owner of a Fuji like mine had his boat sink at the dock and the cause was a bilge siphon that developed when the bilge emptie...

Need some advice. My boat was originally outfitted with three thru-hulls that were at the waterline.
